How will I be involved in discussions about, and planning for, my child’s education?

It is important that you and your child know what their targets are and how they are doing. We report to parents three times a year about their child’s attainment, targets and progress in each curriculum area. Parents’ Evenings are held each term for you to meet their teachers. You can make an appointment to meet a member of our team at Parents Evenings.

When a child is receiving additional support in school (an intervention), we will identify specific targets linked to that support and the intended outcomes. We will review progress and share this information with you and your child at appropriate intervals which will depend on the length and nature of the intervention. For children with more complex needs, we may create an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a Support and Intervention Plan which will describe and evaluate the work we are doing with your child. Sometimes it is helpful to meet in school to evaluate and plan the next steps. At others, a phone call or written communication is more appropriate. For children with a Statement of Special Education Needs (or Education, Health and Care Plan) there will be an Annual Review Meeting (usually held in school) in which yourself, professionals who work with your child and (if appropriate) your child will be involved.

We endeavour to have a supportive relationship with our parents and be available to you to discuss things with you as they arise. We recognise the importance of this communication and accessibility to you, your child and school.

We want you to feel part of our school community and there are many opportunities for you to visit and participate. Sometimes parents find it helpful to come and join in an intervention group to find out about the work their child is doing. At Chantry and Newminster, you might want to come along to one of our Open Days or Parents’ Lunches and spend time with your child in school. At King Edward VI School, our calendar of events is on our website.
