lionA pupil from Newminster Middle School in Morpeth has beaten children from across the UK to win a competition to design a mascot for the Deaf Health Charity SignHealth. Twelve-year-old Ryan won the competition with his lion design which is now being turned into a mascot by Jellyhead Studios in London, who have previously created mascots for the BBC, Asda and The Rainforest Café.

Newminster Middle School takes part each year in sign2sing, a fundraising activity organized by SignHealth. The children learn a specially written song with signs and use the activity as a platform for raising funds to help deaf children in the UK and Uganda.

The completed mascot will be used at SignHealth and sign2sing events.   It will also be making a visit to Morpeth to visit Ryan and his friends later in the year.

“I’m really pleased to have won – I can’t believe it’ said a delighted Ryan “I loved designing my SignHealth mascot and have really enjoyed being part of sign2sing at my school for the past two years.”

Said Susie Norbury, Director of Fundraising at SignHealth: “We received lots of entries and were overwhelmed by the fantastic ideas and creativity.  Everyone at SignHealth loved Ryan’s lion which we thought looked very bright and friendly.  We think he’s going to be a wonderful mascot for the charity.”
